Join colleagues across Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh to explore how we can continue to build a strong culture of inclusion in our mentoring and advising work. As we strive to achieve excellence in education, it is increasingly important that we grow in our capacity to bring together different ideas, critical perspectives, challenges, and lived experiences.

In this day-long summit, staff, faculty, and administrators will discuss innovative approaches to expanding and enhancing existing structures and processes to better facilitate the mentoring and advising experience for students, advisors, mentors, and coaches. The summit will focus on specific tools, techniques, theories, and concepts that support students as they chart clear goals and direction for the future, develop enduring networks of colleagues and mentors, and sustain their pursuit of success after graduation. 

Key organizing questions for the summit include:

• What is the contemporary nature of advising, mentoring, and coaching?
• Who serves in mentoring and advising roles for students on campus? Who do students consider their advisors and mentors?
• What strategies are we using to increase cultural competency in our mentoring and advising practices?
• How can we coordinate efforts across a diverse group of advisors, mentors, and campus partners to most effectively support a student?
• What does advising look like in the digital age? What innovations are emerging that could enhance the advising process?
• What opportunities exist to optimize advising strengths across the two institutions?

Keynote Address: dr. becky martinez

dr. becky martinez is a consultant and trainer with an emphasis on social justice, leadership and organizational change. Her work focuses on engaging individuals and groups to recognize systemic dynamics of privilege and oppression to create more inclusive and equitable policies, practices, and structures. She works with diverse groups at the college level, with community-based organizations, and government agencies. She is a faculty member for the Social Justice Training Institute, a Co-Lead Facilitator for LeaderShape, a board member with Class Action, a former certified trainer for the Anti-Defamation League and the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network and counselor-advocate through Peace over Violence.

One her greatest joys is engaging in all things related to social class identity and class(ism). It’s been a great place of healing for her with a hope she can create ripples to elevate this area of inclusion work. She recently co-authored a book titled Straddling Class in the Academy. As a first-generation college student raised in a working-class family, it was a deeply meaningful project to research and write about something so near to her spirit.
